Everything we do is based upon the principles,
natural laws and values taught to us by American Indian Elders.
There exists a system of natural order that runs the universe.
We follow the system of natural order in the healing process.
Our trainings, programs, and services are based upon four
categories of teachings:
The Four Laws of Change
The Medicine Wheel and the 12 Steps
The Healing Forest Model
The Four Directions Teachings |

in 1984, an American Indian Elder gave Don Coyhis
(Mohican), the founder of White Bison, four Laws that govern
change:
Change is from within.
In order for development to occur, it must be preceded
by a vision.
A great learning must occur.
You must create a Healing Forest.

The Creator designed the universe and our
Mother Earth to function as a system of circles and cycles.
Therefore, to heal we must understand and live by the cycle
and circle system in every area of our lives.
Spring, summer, fall, winter
Baby, youth, adult, elder
Individual, family, community, nation
Recognize, acknowledge, forgive, change
In order to heal, we must follow the natural order of healing |

The Healing Forest is a model for community and organizational
change. It is based on the idea that if you take a sick tree
out of a sick forest, make it well and then return it to
the sick forest, it will sicken and die.
|
 |
| This is the model for a sick or dysfunctional forest
(community). The trees (people) are alcoholic, battered,
violent, and so on. This is so because their roots (backgrounds)
have been subjected to Anger, Guilt, Fear and Shame. |
 |
| |
|
| This is the model for a functional or well
forest. The trees having dysfunctional behaviors have become
healthy and well. These trees are now our Traditional Families,
Sober Leaders, Healthy Youth, and so on. The unwell roots
of Anger, Guilt, Fear and Shame have been transformed,
respectively, into the Four Gifts of Forgiving the Unforgivable,
Healing, Unity, and Hope. This transformation has come
about through the community visioning and change process
known as the Healing Forest Model. It comes about by living
through the Principles, Laws and Values of the Medicine
Wheel and the Circle Teachings. |
