The Medicine Wheel and 12 Steps training for the Phase I is a very intensive process. It consists of two parts. The first part provides the background materials for understanding where the Firestarter Program fits in the overall Wellbriety Movement. In addition, facilitation skills are taught, along with how to conduct talking circles and how to use the recovery resources located at the White Bison website. The following illustrates the patterns and the ‘breakout" of the agenda. Each day will begin with an opening ceremony and end with a closing ceremony.

Evening 1: 5:30pm-9:00pm
Theme: Overview of the Wellbriety Movememt

Day 1: 8:30am-4:30pm

Afternoon: Step 1: Honesty Step 2: Hope Step 3: Faith Step 4: Courage


Evening 2: 5:30pm-9:00pm
Theme: Talking Circle

This is an opportunity to learn how the Talking Circle functions and to participate in one.


Day 2: 8:30am-4:30pm
Theme: Medicine Wheel and 12 Steps--Step5-11

Morning: Step 5: Integrity Step 6: Willingness
Afternoon: Step 7: Humility Step 8: Forgiveness


Evening 3: 5:30pm-9:00pm
Theme: Recovery Resources for Firestarters

Exploration and discussion of the various resources available to assist Firestarters

How to Get a Group Started; Recruiting members and forming circles, Creating an Identity, Naming Circles, Planning and Implementation


Day 3: 8:30am-4:30pm
Theme: Medicine Wheel and 12 Steps--Step 9 and 12

Morning: Step 9: Justice Step 10: Perseverance
Afternoon: Step 11: Spiritual Awakening Step 12: Service


Certification Ceremony for Firestarters
At the end of this intensive program, new Firestarters should be able to implement Circles in their own communities. Supplemental resources are available at the website and White Bison staff is available to answer questions and provide support.

Each Firestarter will also recieve a copy of the Red Road to Wellbriety: In the Native American Way, a series of pamphlets that provide guidance for implementing Circles of Recovery, access to the website chat room and discussion board, and video documentaries about the Sacred Hoop Journeys and the Wellbriety Movement.

Professional Certification and College Credits
CEU credits are available for this training. Also, those who complete the training are eligible to apply for 2 credits of upper division (400 level) college credit from Montana State University at Billings. Forms are available at the workshop.
