  National Recovery Month
September 1-30, 2004
Celebrating Sobriety and Wellness

What is National Recovery Month?
The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (www.samhsa.gov) wants to help local communities promote the idea that Treatment Works! In line with that, they have developed a National Treatment Plan Initiative (www. naxplan.org) and have designated September 2004 as National Drug and Alcohol Addiction Recovery Month as a time to draw attention to the success of treatment efforts.

What is White Bison’s Role?
White Bison, Inc. (www.whitebison.org) has been developing prevention and treatment resources for Native American communities since 1988. Our mission is to bring 100 Native American communities into Wellbriety by the year 2010. To be in a state of Wellbriety means that people live healthy and sober lifestyles that are balanced emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. It also means that the communities develop interconnected resources and strategies to address the prevention, treatment, intervention and recovery needs of babies, youth, adults and elders. The Wellbriety Movement is part of the outreach and development effort to bring individuals, families and communities into Wellbriety all throughout Turtle Island.
September has also been designated National Native American Wellbriety Month. Thus, White Bison has agreed to partner with CSAT to get the word out about the importance of “Joining the Voices of Recovery…Now!” We want to let people know that treatment works, and that we should be proud that we are “in recovery.”
White Bison has been contracted to provide resources, pamphlets, planning and media materials to assist Tulsa, OK, Buffalo, NY, and Rapid City, SD in developing their own Recovery Month activities and events.

What are Recovery Month Events?
Each of the Native American communities selected to participate in the National Recovery Month celebration will hold a variety of events such as community gatherings, runs, presentations, powwows, festivals and other activities that bring attention to the success of treatment efforts. Local coordinators will be scheduling these events for the month of September.
