Brief History:
The school was opened in 1893 primarily to serve Ojibwe and Dakota students. Early on, the school was named the Riggs Institute but was always referred to as Flandreau because it was located at the Flandreau Agency.
The school opened with 98 students. In 1931, Flandreau became an accredited high school and operated under the name Flandreau Indian Vocational High School until 1964, when it became known as Flandreau High School.
Flandreau's sister school, just 20 miles across the state line, was Pipestone Indian Boarding School which opened the same year as Flandreau. The close proximity of the two schools allowed frequent interaction.
Today, enrollment at Flandreau averages about 200 students in grades 9-12.
