Riverside Indian School |
| Location: Anadarko, OK |
| Years of Operation: 1871-Present |
| Brief History: The first school was organized at the Old Wichita Indian Agency Commissary and consisted of 8 students. A new building was erected in 1872, with 40 students and it became known as the Wichita-Caddo School. A fire at the school in 1878 forced it to close and another school was re-established one mile away and became known as the Riverside Indian School. By 1893, the school had an attendance of 60 Wichita, Caddo and Delaware students. More students arrived from other tribes in 1922 so more money was allotted and, by 1929, 155 boys attended the school and the campus continued to expand. Seven dorms completed in 1941 are still in use today and nearly 800 girls and boys attend Riverside in the 4th to 12th grade levels. The campus covers 135 acres and the school's proximity to Anadarko allows students to enjoy skating, movies and weekend picnics at local parks. |
