Sherman Indian School

Location: Riverside, CA
Years of Operation: 1892 - Present
Brief History: Originally called the Perris Indian School, Stewart was the first off-reservation boarding school in California. The original 80-acre site near Perris, CA, was moved to a site in the city of Riverside in 1901 due to inadequate water supply at the Perris site. By 1904, all students at the Perris School had been transferred to Sherman. Stewart's first desks and dining room seats were dry good boxes--some students had to stand to eat their meals. Its first class graduated in 1904, but the school didn't have money to buy diplomas. Students at the school ranged from 5 years old to the early 20s, with the early enrollment being mostly Native children from southern California. A school museum is housed on campus and is open by appointment.
