Brief History: The Stewart Indian School site consists of 83 buildings on a 109-acre campus that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stewart opened in 1890 with 37 students from local tribes and by 1919, 400 students were attending the school. The school focused on academics and teaching basic trades including stone masonry. Students constructed over 60 Native stone buildings. Students from more than 200 tribes are reported to have attended the school at one time.
A self-guided walking tour of the campus is available. The Stewart Indian School Trial enables visitors to access recorded messages from alumni and employees about their personal experiences at the school. |
