What would a Firestarter
do?
- Commit to conduct a circle of recovery at
least once per week for four years.
- Recruit someone from your community to help
you in case you could not make it.
- Train others in your community to start more
circles of recovery.
- Work with White Bison to put together a community
healing strategy in your community.
- Help gather statistics to track if the recovery
plan is working.
- Organize various community organizations to
form a recovery plan in your community.
Who could be a Firestarter?
Individuals involved in their own recovery programs:
AA members, Al-Anon members, Narcotics Anonymous
members, Mental health individuals who are in
recovery, Twelve step work in prisons, Treatment
Centers which work with Indian people, You and
Me.
Criteria:
- Individual must be sober for one year prior
to training.
- Has experience in Recovery (Al-Anon, AA, Gamblers
Anonymous, NA, etc.
- Has demonstrated Recovery leadership in their
own community.
- Is willing to do 12 step work.
- Is willing to work on themselves emotionally,
mentally, physically, and spiritually.
- Is able to commit to participating in three
training sessions (one each year for 3 years
).
- Is willing to participate in the development
and authoring of An American Indian Big Book.
Community Experience:
- Has been providing a service to the recovery.
- Is able to demonstrate a commitment to Wellbriety.
- Has an appreciation for the culture and life
ways of an individual community.
- Has the ability to encourage people to apply
their own cultural ways to the program.
- Will be able to share what they learn with
support groups and individuals.
- Is willing to assist the local community in
the development of a Community Wellbriety Plan.
- Includes the gathering and analysis of socioeconomic
data regarding the recovery community.
